I’ll also give you some extra little tips, for example, which is the best scooter for 5 year olds and so on.

Zoomy Leisure 2-in-1 Mini Scooter with Removable Seat

Zoomy Leisure Kids 2-in-1 Mini Scooter with Removable Seat (Green)

I like this scooter as my boy can sit on it and also he loves the lights. Its a very good buy. – Edith

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 18+ months
  • Seat Height: 27 cm – 34 cm
  • Weight: 2.5kg
  • Maximum Load: 60 kg

The Zoomy Leisure 2-in-1 is the best first scooter for toddlers, thanks to its great versatility and ability to grow with your child. For very young children, the seat provides a safe way for kids as young as 18 months to push along. Once they gain some confidence, the seat can be removed and the Zoomy becomes one of the best three-wheel scooters with adjustable height handlebars.

This scooter has a wide deck that sits low to the ground which provides a stable ride and the large front wheels are great at absorbing shock over rough surfaces. The handlebars have a soft grip coating, making steering with the flexible lean and steer system super easy.

With a choice of four colours as well as LED wheels that light up whilst scooting, this toddler scooter is made from durable and hard-wearing plastic. It really is a great contender for the best scooter for 2 year olds and younger to learn scooting and enjoy a bit of casual whizzing around.

What we love:

  • Grows with your child and is suitable from a very young age thanks to the removable seat.
  • Light up wheels were a hit with our kids!
  • The wide deck is grippy and low to the ground which all combine to make a much safer scooter for young ones.

What we don’t love:

  •  Some reviews report that the colour can fade quite quickly.

Zoomy Mini 3 Wheel Scooter

Zoomy Leisure Kids Mini 3-Wheel Scooter with LED Light-up Wheels for Children 2-5. Adjustable Height Handlebars. (Green)

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 24 months up to 5 years

What we don’t love:

  •  It took my little one a while to understand the “lean and steer” concept

Scoot & Ride Highwaybaby+ 2-in-1

Scoot & Ride highwaybaby+ 2-in-1 Scooter & Balance Bike ,Ride On-Pink

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 12+ months
  • Seat Height: 31 cm
  • Maximum Load: 20 kg

I really love the whole Highway range of scooters but the Baby+ is the best scooter for toddlers and infants as young as just 12 months! You may think that sounds too young but our daughter had a balance bike at 14 months and was more than capable of using it.

The incredibly simple push-button allows this model to be converted from balance bike to scooter and back again in seconds. You don’t need any tools or to mess with any fiddly screws or clips and toddlers can even do it themselves.

The Highwaybaby+ is fairly lightweight, at just under 3kg, so easy for parents to drag or carry around if kids get bored. It has a large rear wheel brake pad and the two colour choices mean it’s, not only, the best scooter for boys but a great choice for a girls scooter too.

It’s rated to a maximum load of 20kg, meaning it’s safe for most kids to use throughout the toddler years. This scooter has a hard-wearing plastic deck but the handlebars and fork are made from steel, meaning it’s extra durable for those rough riding toddlers.

If you’re looking for the best scooter for 1 year olds this would be a great option to get them started. The balance bike is easy for little kids to learn the concept of scooting whilst still having a seat to rest their legs. It then easily converts into the best infant scooter once they’ve gained some confidence.

Take a look at my ultimate guide to finding the best balance bike here.

What we love:

  • No tools at all are required to switch between balance bike and scooter, making it super easy if you have indecisive kids!
  • Perfect way to introduce very young children to scooting and biking.

What we don’t love:

  •  A little clunky and heavy in scooting mode for very young children.

Best Off-Road Scooter Review

Eurotrike Xero 12 BMX Scooter

My daughter absolutely loves this scooter. Its very different to the standard small scooters around these days but my daughter loves the fact that the larger tyres allow her to go over different ground from lawn to compacted dirt/paths. – Ryan

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 4+ years
  • Brake: Front and rear handbrakes
  • Maximum Load: 40 kg

If you live in a rural area or know your child will be doing a lot of scooting around over grassy areas, you should definitely consider the Eurotrike Xero. The large 12 inches, pump up tires absorb shock well and allow for a much smoother ride over grassed or rough surfaces.

The adjustable handlebars allow the scooter to grow with your child and it’s the best scooter 4 year olds and up can enjoy when they want to ride a little rougher. The dual front and rear handbrakes provide some great stopping power and the safety pad on the handlebars soften any accidental blows.

Its strong and extremely durable steel frame does add some extra weight meaning it won’t be as easy to carry if kids become fed up halfway through a walk (we’ve all been there). However, the extra strength of the frame is really important for off-road riding.

What we love:

  • Great on rough terrain so perfect if you have a large yard with a lot of grass.
  • Kickstand is a bonus as many kids scooters don’t have them.

What we don’t love:

  •  It’s very heavy for a scooter and would be very difficult for a younger child to carry or manoeuvre.
  • Front brake might take some getting used to for kids used to traditional rear braking scooters

Best Children’s Scooter Reviews

Zoomy Kids 2 Wheel Scooter – Best Scooter for 5 Year Old, Australia

I put research into finding the best scooter for my 5 year old, transitioning from a 3-wheeler. This was it. It arrived pretty quickly and is better then I imagined. It is really sturdy and my daughter loves it! Also a great price! – Lisa

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 5+ years
  • Weight: 2.8 kg
  • Maximum Load: 100 kg

The second Zoomy brand scooter on my list is definitely the best scooter for 5-year-olds and up as it requires a bit more confidence and balance. The wheels light up when moving, which most young kids will love.

It’s also a great option for your child’s first scooter. The deck is a softer plastic with no sharp edges, as opposed to the usual metal deck which could cause some bad bumps when they fall. The non-slip surface on the deck is a great added safety feature that will stop little ones from slipping, even with wet feet.

The Zoomy 2 wheel scooter is so versatile and can also be used for tricks at the skatepark thanks to its reinforced steel bar below the deck. The adjustable-height handlebars mean it can grow with your child from a newbie scooter to a more confident trick scooter.

What we love:

  • Softer deck than most 2 wheel scooters – perfect for beginners
  • Steel bar under deck makes it a great first trick scooter

What we don’t love:

  •  Hard to find anything at all!!

Mongoose Rise Freestyle Kick Scooter

Mongoose Rise 110 Elite Freestyle Kick Scooter, Blue/Yellow

Easy to assemble (just had to attach the handlebar) and it seems sturdy enough to take a thrashing at the skate park by my novice kid. The handlebars are extra wide compared to his last scooter and the deck is a lot wider, which he loves. – Sky

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 8+ years
  • Brakes: Rear-wheel foot brake
  • Maximum Load: 100 kg

The Mongoose Rise 100 is the best scooter for 8-year-olds and up who are just starting their scooting journey. It’s a great option for beginners that won’t break the bank so you can see if your child sticks with trick scooting before moving to a more expensive model.

This scooter is very durable yet lightweight thanks to the alloy deck, which is long so great for pro scooting style tricks at the skate park. Reviewers regularly say that it holds up incredibly well to regular hard use and the build quality and strength are nearly always mentioned as a huge positive.

The whole deck, as well as the brake, is covered in a Maxgrip material so kids can scoot fast with confidence. The one-piece “T bar” style handlebars, again, mean great durability but the soft grip makes sure that scooting for longer durations is still comfortable.

What we love:

  • The sheer number of design options is awesome – sure to be something to suit any kid.
  • Can be adjusted to small enough for a child but is still strong enough to carry an older teen or adult.
  • Considering the very durable build, it’s at a great price point compared to other trick scooters.

What we don’t love:

  •  Not necessarily for kids who like just scooting around. Definitely a trick scooter for those interested in getting started.

Micro Sprite Kids Scooter – Best Scooter for 6 Year Old, Australia

Micro Sprite Kids Scooter - 2 Wheel Folding Kick Scooter with Adjustable Height - Black

Delivered on time into my door, in a very protective packing service. Micro sprite has all the function my son needs – up to 100kg, folding, stable wheels, good for skate park too. – Alex

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 6+ years
  • Brakes: Rear-wheel foot brake
  • Maximum Load: 100 kg

The Microsprite is a great scooter for kids to cruise to school on or around the park or neighbourhood but it’s not a trick scooter and for that, I’d recommend the Mongoose model above. In terms of just scooting around it is perfect though and the high-quality bearings make for a smooth ride.

It’s easy to fold and lightweight enough to carry around easily, much like many of the other options here. The best thing about the Micro Sprite though is the impressive adjustability to the handlebars which have a 30 cm range, much more than other scooter options. This makes it the best scooter for 6-year-olds right through to the teen years and it’s one of the good scooters to buy as a long-term investment.

What we love:

  • A 2 year manufacturer warranty is always a bonus.
  • Great handlebar adjustable so it’s will grow very well with your child

What we don’t love:

  •  Not great in wet weather but then again many scooters aren’t.
  • On the expensive side when compared to say the Mongoose scooter above.

Best Razor Scooters Reviews

Razor Kick Scooter for Kids

Razor A Kick Scooter - Red - FFP

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 5 to 10 years
  • Brakes: Rear-wheel foot brake
  • Maximum Load: 65 kg

Razor is the top scooter brand on the market and has been around for years. This is their entry-level model and the best price Razor scooter for kids to get started on without spending a fortune. It has thousands of reviews on Amazon and the vast majority of Razor A kick scooter reviews are incredibly positive!

The A model razor kick scooter is built from aircraft-grade aluminium, making it super durable but impressively lightweight at just 3kg. As you would expect from such an experienced brand, the build quality is excellent but it is definitely more suited to very smooth surfaces.

After scouring the internet for reviews (my brother had one when he was a kid but that was MANY moons ago now) this model is recommended for kids between 5 and 10 years old. From the age of 10 years, the adjustable handlebars become a little too low and you should take a look at the A5 below instead.

As with most Razor models, the scooter folds in half to allow for easy carrying or storage and it also comes in a range of colours to suit any child.

What we love:

  • Available in 8 colours to suit most tastes.
  • A trusted brand and model of scooter for years so you’re getting all those years of knowledge and improvements over time.
  • Very reasonably priced as a first serious scooter for kids

What we don’t love:

  •  There really isn’t anything, it’s very hard to beat for the price!

Razor A5 Lux Scooter

Razor A5 Lux Scooter, Pink

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 10+ years
  • Brakes: Rear-wheel foot brake
  • Maximum Load: 100 kg

The Razor A5 Lux is the best scooter for 10-year-olds and particularly tall kids as the handlebars can be adjusted to be much taller than some other Razor models. Some kids as young as 8 would love this option though. If they have scooted before and don’t need a padded or plastic deck, this could be a great option. It’s available in 4 colour choices so there’s sure to be something for any kid.

It’s very similar to other models that are also marketed to the same age range but it’s actually a lighter option so it’s the best choice for kids. This scooter has larger wheels than scooters aimed at younger children. This means they’ll find it smoother to ride and can get over cracks in the pavement etc much easier

It’s very easy to fold down and carry around at only 3.8kg but I can’t imagine someone as young as 8 finding it easy. The A5 is a great option for older kids up to older teens who have a short commute to school, college, or a weekend job.

What we love:

  • Large wheels allow for a smoother ride, even over cracks and crevices
  • The lightest Razor scooter option for older kids and teens
  • Four colour choices

What we don’t love:

  • Might not be suitable if your child is younger and never scooted before, try something with a softer or plastic deck instead.

Want Something a Little Different?

Y Volution Fliker Wiggle Scooter

Specifications

  • Recommended Age: 5+ years
  • Brakes: Handbrake
  • Maximum Load: 50 kg

The Y Fliker is awesome if you want to get your child something a little different from the usual scooters. It does come with a bit of a learning curve, but once you master the different ways of scooting it’s fast and a really unique kids scooter.

This scooter works using both legs, instead of just one like normal scooters. It’s powered when you use the pedals in a stepping/pushing motion which then propels the scooter forward. Once you’ve got the technique down, it’s easy and fun to maneuver.

Definitely expect to turn some heads with this scooter!

What we love:

  • It is unique so a great learning experience for kids!
  • Sturdy and great quality
  • It folds up!

What we don’t love:

Types Of Scooters Available

an image of a happy girl and boy using the best scooter for kids

Three Wheel Scooters

The best three wheel scooters have a single wheel at the back and two wheels at the front. These scooters have much better stability and balance, making them the safest and best scooter for toddlers or young kids to enjoy.

Two Wheel Scooters

Pretty self-explanatory really – a scooter with just two wheels! These are probably what springs to mind when you try to think of the top kid’s scooters. This type of scooter is generally faster, able to hold more weight, and usually much more durable and made of metal. The best 2 wheel scooter for kids is better suited to slightly older kids who just want to get out, scoot around, and have a bit of fun.

Trick Scooters/Pro Scooters

Trick scooters or pro scooters generally look very similar to a two-wheel scooter but they are optimised slightly for performing stunts and tricks. Usually, they are built to a much better standard, are extremely lightweight, and have wider handlebars. All this makes them much more stable on ramps and when performing jumps or flips. This is definitely the best scooter to buy if your child really wants to emulate the kids at the skatepark, or wants to be a bit more experimental with their scooting

Electric Scooters

Electric scooters are much more flash and use a rechargeable battery and electric motor to get around. They don’t need the child actually to push the scooter along, so they won’t be giving your kid that much exercise. They’re also a lot heavier, due to all the extra components, and therefore not as easy to transport and they, generally, come with a higher price tag.

What To Think About

I found there were two main things to consider when trying to find the best child scooter. Firstly, the age of your child and, secondly, the type of scooting they will be doing.

an image of a family with a boy and a toddler using the best child scooter

Age of Child

The age of the child you are buying for is super important as they all have very different skill levels. The best scooter for 10 year old boys will be vastly different from the best scooter 2-year-olds can use! Every scooter is also rated for different weight loads and these, usually correspond to age.

Toddlers and Young Children: In most cases, the best option is going to be a three-wheel scooter as they provide much more stability. The great thing about the best 3 wheel scooter for kids is they usually have a heap of optional extras or add ons. Some even have removable seats so that children as young as one can sit and scoot along, like this example. Three-wheel scooters are the best option if you want to build a young child’s confidence. These are usually the best scooter for 3 year olds and below.

Four Years +: The best scooter for 4 year olds and up is going to be a two-wheel option. There is the biggest selection of scooters for this age group and choosing one will probably come down to personal preference and how serious you see them being about scooting in the future.

Teenagers: The choices change a lot for teens, and they could either use a trick scooter, off-road scooter, or even an electric scooter. The best scooter for big kids always needs to be rated for a higher weight load and must fit with the type of scooting they plan on doing (see below). The absolute best scooter for teenager, Australia, will likely be a Razor trick scooter.

am image of a boy with his best scooter for big kids

Type of Scooting

If you want to buy the best scooter for the money you need to know what type of scooting a child will be doing. If they are not a serious scooter, there really isn’t much point in spending a huge amount of money on a pro-style scooter.

Recreational Scooting: For young children and kids who just like to scoot around the yard or down to the park, a normal two-wheel scooter is perfect. The best two-wheel scooters are usually very affordable and easy for any child to enjoy. If you think your child will be on grass or rough ground regularly, you might also want to consider an off-road scooter. Some of the best electric scooters for kids could be suitable for younger ages too.

Pro/Trick Scooting: If your child is older or more serious about scooting (with a group of friends at a skate park for instance) you may want to consider a trick scooter. The best scooter for older kids is one that meets their specific needs and style of scooting. A lot of older kids want to try and master jumps and tricks and this needs a certain style of scooter that is hard wearing and can handle grinding and jumping. Pro scooters are the best kids scooter to buy for a serious scooter enthusiast and will save you money in the long-run when a standard scooter can’t handle the pace.

If your kid is interested in trick scooting, check this great article on beginner scooter tricks.

Features of The Best Scooter For Kids, 2023

Brakes

Brakes are an important safety feature of scooters. There are three main types of brake systems to look out for when finding the best scooter for kids. Make sure your child is comfortable with the scooter’s brakes before letting them loose.

  • No Brakes: Most three-wheel scooters don’t have brakes at all due to their low speed and the expectation that toddlers will be supervised most of the time. I would advise against buying a 2 wheel scooter or scooter for older kids without brakes.
  • Handlebar Brakes: These work exactly like the brakes on a bike. The brake is attached to the handlebars and the child needs to squeeze the brake with their hand to slow the wheels.
  • Rear Fender Brake: A great option for young children and very easy to use. The brake is a lever shaped around the top of the back wheel and the child needs to simply step back with their foot and apply pressure to stop the wheel.

Deck

In basic terms, this is the part of the scooter that you stand on and it comes in a different range of widths and shapes, each with its own benefits and disadvantages. For example, the best 3 wheel scooter for toddlers will probably have a wider deck to allow more stability and room for them to stand.

The thinner the deck the lighter a scooter will usually be, so consider this when purchasing. Pro or trick scooters will usually have a narrow deck to make them lightweight and easier to perform stunts with.

Finally, the best kids scooters, Australia, should have a non-slip surface to the deck to allow for easy pushing along without feet slipping.

Build Material

Most two-wheel scooters and the best children’s scooters are usually made with an aluminium deck and plastic wheels so that they are lightweight and easy to perform tricks on or for younger kids to manoeuvre. However, some three-wheel scooters or scooters for younger children could be made with a durable plastic deck instead and may not be quite as hard-wearing.

Recap of Our Favourites

In case you missed it, below is our quick comparison chart to help you compare kids scooters at a glance.

If you’re shopping for a very young child aged between 18 months and about 4 years old, it’s hard to beat the Zoomy Leisure with a removable seat. We don’t use that exact one because it was out of stock when we bought but we have one that is VERY similar and it’s been a hit for the last 2 years!!

If you’re shopping for a child aged between 5 years and about 9 then the Zoomy Leisure 2 wheel scooter is a great option. If you’re shopping for an older kid or a teenager, it’s really hard to beat the Razor A5 Lux for a high quality trick scooter.
