Why Use a Bassinet?

It’s generally recommended that the baby sleeps in the same room as parents for at least the first few months, which sounds good in theory, except we don’t all have huge rooms that will fit a full-size cot in. If that’s the case, then a bassinet is the answer.

It’s definitely not an essential item, and some parents prefer a baby to go straight into a cot. It’s really a personal choice and there isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Ultimately it comes down to where baby and parent are happiest.

If you want to try co-sleeping, or would just feel better-having baby in the same room, then a bassinet is something you should try. They allow the baby to be much closer to you during the night, making it easier for the middle of the night feeds, and can lead to deeper bonding.

Types of Bassinets

There are a couple of different types of bassinet, and it can be quite confusing if you’ve never had one before. I’ll explain the differences below.

Traditional Bassinets

A traditional bassinet is just like a smaller version of a cot. It’s what comes to mind first when someone asks what is the best bassinet for a baby. Usually free-standing, with all four sides, it cocoons the baby in a snug environment.

Co-Sleeper Bassinets

Some families, however, prefer to co-sleep. In this case, the best bassinet for co-sleeping would be a perfect choice. The best co-sleeper bassinets have only three sides and attach to the side of your bed so you can be close to the baby all night.

So what features should you be thinking about when searching for the best bassinet in Australia. I’ll take you through some below.

Safety

Safety is obviously a huge consideration when buying anything for a new baby. You don’t want to buy anything that will endanger them, so make sure any bassinet you buy meets safety guidelines and works for you as a family.

There are no official safety standards for bassinets in Australia, but you could check for international standards, or check against the rocking cradle standard.

• Correct fit for mattress and bedding
• No soft material around the edge (mesh is best for better airflow)
• Locking mechanism (if the bassinet rocks)
• Sturdy feet, or bed attachment
• No loose straps or ribbons

Age Range/Capacity

Think about how long you want the baby to sleep in the bassinet. Will it just be for a couple of months or longer? The best bassinet to buy depends on your choice. What is important when it comes to comfort, is having a well-fitted mattress and sheets, to ensure the baby doesn’t tangle in them. Experts advise getting a thin, hard mattress, and avoiding a pillow until the baby is at least a year old.

Height

There are a couple of considerations with height when picking a bassinet. The first is how far you have to bend down to pick up the baby. You obviously don’t want to be bending too far over, especially in the middle of the night. A co-sleeper bassinet would help this, as there is no barrier between you and your little one.

A really important consideration is how high the walls should be to keep baby safe, especially once they’re getting older.
