What is a Baby Sleeping Bag?

A baby sleeping bag is usually somewhat similar to a conventional adult sleeping bag, with a few key differences.

They are designed to be a safe alternative to swaddling since some babies fuss all night if swaddled and struggle to get sound sleep. A baby sleeping bag usually has a safety collar that prevents the head from slipping beneath the bag.

Some have sleeves, others are sleeveless and some are designed to have the arms contained. Some are multi-featured, allowing you to change your baby’s sleeping position as they grow and change.

Sleeping Bag vs Swaddle

Swaddling has been a traditional way of putting babies down to sleep for millenniums — the earliest depiction of a swaddled baby is dated as being 4500 years old!

Swaddling means to wrap the baby securely using a blanket. It’s thought that the sensation of being wrapped like this mimics the feeling of being in the womb. It also helps to prevent the baby from waking themself with reflexive jerky movements, such as kicking their legs.

If your baby wakes frequently during the night, you may wish to choose to swaddle over a sleeping bag until their sleep schedule becomes more consistent.

The general consensus is that swaddling is very safe for babies (after all it’s been done since at least the beginning of recorded history!) However, as with all sleep methods, there are some dangers.

A big one to look out for is overheating. Being tightly wrapped means the baby’s body heat has less chance to escape — be sure to use breathable fabric to swaddle.

Some physicians also argue that restricting babies’ legs can cause hip dysplasia and dislocation. Babies have naturally bowed legs as a result of being in the fetal position in the womb, which gradually straightens out over time once they begin to use their legs for crawling and walking. It’s thought that straightening the legs for long periods (during swaddling) can force the hips into an unnatural position. If you choose to swaddle, read up on how to do it safely here.

Sleeping bags provide an alternative to swaddling. Although your baby is still warm and secure, they have the freedom to move about a little, stretching out their arms and legs when they need to. Sleeping bags are also thought to be less prone to cause overheating.

Something that parents love the most about sleeping bags is how convenient they are. Many have two-way zippers meaning you can do a stealthy nappy change in the middle of the night without waking Baby up. Some (with arms and legs) can be used when your baby is awake — like in the mornings or right before bed, meaning that if they spontaneously fall asleep, you don’t risk waking them up again to swaddle them.

Features to Consider

Think about what you and Baby will be doing with your sleeping bag, as well as the sort of temperatures you need to prepare for. Read about key features to consider below.

Style/type of sleeping bag

Some sleeping bags are like a traditional adult sleeping bag. Others have sleeves to allow for free movement of the arms. Some have legs too — a select few allow you to zip or unzip the legs so you can change between a sleeping bag shape or sleepsuit shape.

Baby sleeping bag TOG guide

TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade and is an official measure of how “warm” clothes or bedding are. The TOG that Baby needs completely depends on the temperature of their sleeping environment, and will be affected by additional layers they may wear underneath the bag. Be sure to use a nursery thermometer to get an accurate temperature reading.

The best sleep sack for summer will be of a different TOG to the best sleep sack for winter. It’s every parent’s nightmare to cause their baby to either overheat or be too cold, so read our guide below to find out which TOG baby sleeping bag to use. Measure TOG using the best baby thermometer!

  • Above 27 °C = 0.2 TOG — This is a very thin layer. During the Australian summer, outside temperatures can soar up to 35 °C and beyond. Although you’ll most likely be using air conditioning, it’s still possible that the nursery will see some warm temperatures and you must make sure Baby is dressed accordingly to prevent overheating. If the temperature is above 27 °C, do not use any additional clothing with the sleeping bag — just nappy.
  • 24-27 °C = 0.5 TOG — This is a slightly thicker layer to be used with hot temperatures. Baby can wear just a nappy, or a sleeveless bodysuit with the sleeping bag, depending on the exact temperature.
  • 22-24 °C = 1.0 TOG — This TOG is good for warm temperatures. Baby can wear a sleeveless or short-sleeved bodysuit.
  • 20-22 °C = 1.0 TOG — Use with a short-sleeved or long-sleeved bodysuit.
  • 18-20 °C = 2.5 TOG — Use with a long-sleeved bodysuit.
  • 16-18 °C = 2.5 TOG — Use with a long sleepsuit.
  • 16- 18 °C = 2.5 TOG — Use with a long sleepsuit, Grosuit, or pyjamas.
  • 14-16 °C = 3.5 TOG — Use with a long-sleeved bodysuit, sleepsuit, Grosuit, or pyjamas.
  • Below 14 °C=- 3.5 TOG — When it’s very chilly (perhaps when camping), you can use this TOG with two other layers: bodysuit, sleepsuit, Grosuit, or pyjamas.

Size

Make sure you take note of the size (usually in months) that you’re purchasing. Of course, you don’t want to waste money by buying a sleeping bag that is much too small for your baby but doesn’t get one that is too big either — this can be dangerous since the baby’s head might slip below the collar.

Fabric

There’s a choice of fabrics out there for baby sleeping bags. Commonly used is cotton, since this is a soft, breathable fabric. Some use a bamboo outer, which is also lovely and breathable. Don’t buy a sleeping bag that uses polyester as an inner material that will touch the baby’s skin, since this can promote a sweaty and clammy environment.

FAQs

Which TOG sleeping bag does my baby need?

This depends on the temperature of the sleeping environment — read our TOG guide above for more info.

What should my baby wear under their sleeping bag?

Baby can either wear just a nappy or pyjamas underneath but it should depend on the temperature of their sleeping environment and the TOG of the sleeping bag. It’s best to use a nursery thermometer so you can be sure of the temperature and to always read the advice provided with your particular sleeping bag. Read our TOG guide above which explains in more detail.

What size baby sleeping bag to buy?

Buy your sleeping bag according to the size given in months and the age of your baby. Sleeping bags can last several months since they are loose fitting, but never put your baby in a sleeping bag that is too big, since their head may become trapped inside.
