Best Baby Night Light Reviews

So now we’ve looked at why night lights are useful, as well as some features, below we’ve listed our baby night light reviews to help you compare the best night lights on the market right now.

Baby Studio Star

Specifications

  • Light: Soft colour-changing light
  • Power Source: USB charging with rechargeable batteries
  • Weight: 0.30Kg

This star-shaped night light looks right at home in any nursery with its adorable shape and colour-changing light. The light is soft and soothing but bright enough for those middle of the night checks.

The display reads the room temperature and is large enough to be seen from the doorway, meaning the baby isn’t disturbed. As well as this digital display, the light will change colour if the temperature gets too hot or too cold, so you can easily check it, even from a baby monitor.

As far as other features go, there isn’t much more to this light, but it is adorable and very easy to use.

What we love

  • Stays on all night to soothe baby
  • Digital temperature display
  • It looks cute

What we don’t love

  • Charger wire is too short

LED Baby Night Light

Night Lights for Kids, VAVA Baby Night Light, Bedside Lamp for Breastfeeding, ABS+PP, Touch Control, Timer Setting

I love this night light. It’s easy to use and you can lower the light intensity by holding on the top. Warm light and bright light are available and its easily charged. – Kevin T.

Specifications

  • Light: Baby safe LED light, white
  • Power Source: USB charging and battery
  • Switch Style: Touch

This small, customisable night light is the perfect size for your newborn’s nursery, while also being small enough to travel with. The touch controls are easy to use, while the anti-blue light won’t harm the baby’s eyes, even if left on all night. It can even be hung from the ceiling or a wall, for complete flexibility.

The quality of light output is great, with a number of different brightness settings. On its dimmest setting (perfect for leaving on all night, while still being able to see the baby), the battery claims to last 200 hours, while on the brightest setting (perfect for reading a story), the battery should last at least 6 hours.

Overall this is a great option, with an easy Micro-USB charging point and long battery life. While the controls are not completely intuitive and can take a while to get the hang of, once you do, they’re simple to use, leaving you more time to bond with the baby.

What we love

  • Touch sensors
  • Indoor/outdoor usage
  • Timer mode
  • Up to 200 hours battery life

What we don’t love

  • None!

Playette Star Glow Cube

Playette Star Glow Cube, Multi

We love it! Very versatile as it uses batteries so it can be moved from room to room. It has a subtle glow, not too bright for babies and plays soft music when needed. – Franck

Specifications

  • Light: Soft colour-changing light
  • Power Source: 3 AA batteries
  • Dimensions: 20 x 10 x 28 cm

This soft light is soothing and relaxing for both baby and mum. The light is subtle but bright enough for those night-time feeds. The light changes colour while projecting stars around your nursery, creating a calming environment.

A range of lullabies is included for those nights when you need a little extra help getting the baby to sleep, as well as a few natural sounds to drown out outside noise. The light has a 15-minute auto-off timer, which is useful, but maybe not quite long enough if the baby is unsettled or wakes frequently.

What we love

  • Star projector
  • Lullabies/natural sounds
  • Light and sounds can be configured separately

What we don’t love

  • You can’t stop the light on a specific colour
  • Some users find the light too low

My Baby Sound Spa & Projector

Homedics My Baby SoundSpa Lullaby Projector for Baby/Infant Sleep Sound w/Timer

Specifications

  • Light: Changeable projection discs
  • Power Source: AC/DC power (not battery operated)
  • Auto-timer: 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes

The highlight of this night light is undoubtedly the changeable, rotating projector disc, which allows you to choose from one of three scenes to be projected on to the nursery walls or ceiling. The different discs display either the night sky, farm animals, or the ocean, so you can find which image works best for your baby.

With only 3 lullabies and 3 natural sounds, this light doesn’t have the range of sounds that other lights may have, but it does play them continuously through the night, meaning wake up calls are minimised (you can also change the auto-timer to 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes if preferred).

This light is a great option if the baby wakes a lot during the night, the projector adds interest to the room while the sounds soothe them. The volume and brightness can both be changed with the easy-to-use controls.

What we love

  • Lullabies/natural sounds
  • Adaptable auto-off timer
  • Digital volume/brightness controls

What we don’t love

  • Powered by 3 AAA batteries
  • Choice of two colours
  • 30 minutes of projection time
  • Portable and cord-free

Best Night Light for Toddler Reviews

Motion Sensor LED

Motion Sensor LED Night Light,USB Rechargeable, Colour-Changeable Night Light, Light for Hallway, Cabinet, Closet, Stairs, Bathroom, Magnetic Stick Anywhere (2 Pack White) …

Great little piece of kit. Sensors are excellent and you can leave Auto mode on all the time – know when lights are on or sun is out and doesn’t activate. – Chris P

Specifications

  • Light: Multi-colour (choice of eight colours)
  • Power Source: Rechargeable Battery
  • Dimensions: 7.5 x 7.5 x 3.3 cm

These motion sensor LED lights are a great option for any household. They can be installed anywhere in your home, from the hallway to the garage, but the colours and smart sensors make them perfect for your toddler’s bedroom.

They come in a pack of two, with a choice of eight colours to be set by you (or your toddler!). With three modes, they can be customised to your toddler, depending on how well they sleep. The sensor means the light only comes on when motion is detected, so your toddler won’t be kept awake by the bright light, but will have light should they need to have a drink or go potty.

If your toddler is scared of the dark, this may not be the best option. The motion sensor means they will most likely be off when trying to sleep, so they will not help to soothe any fears.

What we love

  • Rechargeable battery with up to 90 days of usage on one charge
  • Smart sensors with adaptable modes
  • Portable

What we don’t love

  • The brightness could definitely improve

Skip Hop Dream and Shine

Skip Hop Dream and Shine Sleep Trainer,

I really enjoyed this and it was successful in calming my baby when combined with other soothing techniques (swaying, dummy). I particularly like the rain forest track for keeping me calm as well! – Kia

Specifications

  • Light: Soft glow
  • Power Source: Battery
  • Dimensions: 17.78 x 8.38 x 10.92 cm

This 4in1 night light is a great addition to any nursery. The cloud and sun design is delightful, whilst still being practical. The night light mode emits a soft glow, which can be customised easily to your desired brightness level.

While the sounds are limited (two natural sounds and one lullaby) and could be too quiet if you live in a loud house, they work well as a night time soother or a gentle alarm clock for your growing toddler.

The sleep trainer can be adapted to the best wake up time for your family, with the light changing colour to amber, then green, to let your toddler know it’s time to get up.

What we love

  • Adorable cloud and sun 4in1 design
  • Three brightness levels
  • Calming sounds/lullabies
  • Powered by 2 AA batteries
  • Portable

What we don’t love

  • The loudest setting is not loud enough

The Gro Company GroClock

The Gro Company Groclock with Book

Specifications

  • Light: Blue and yellow
  • Power Source: AC/DC power (not battery operated)
  • Dimensions: 14 x 12.5 x 14 cm

The screen of this night light changes from blue to yellow in the morning so your toddler can easily identify when it’s time to get up. The stars and hearts which display gradually are also an easy visual indicator of time passing. The brightness of the screen can be adjusted so it’s perfect for soothing your toddler to sleep while aiding those night time potty trips.

Wake up times can be adapted to your schedule, with the option to set different times for weekdays and weekends, but it does need to be set every night, which can become a hassle. It’s also not the most intuitive of lights to set up.

What we love

  • Fun images to aid with the passing of time
  • Adjustable screen brightness
  • Sleep training
  • AC/DC power (not battery operated)
  • Digital display to help children learn to tell time
  • Option for an audible alarm

What we don’t love

  • It is ridiculously unintuitive to set up
  • You need to manually set it each night (otherwise it is just a clock)

Zazu Sleep Trainer

Specifications

  • Light: Colour Changing
  • Power Source: AC/DC power or battery
  • Suitable for: 2 Years +

Sam is an adorable lamb sent to help sleep train your toddler. With eyes that open during the day and close during the night, as well a colour changing display, Sam gives easy visual clues to your toddler on whether they can get up or not.

The adjustable brightness of the night light is useful for toddlers who are afraid of the dark, but it can also be turned off completely if your child prefers.

This light can be powered by mains or by a battery, although the power lead is quite short so you may need an extension lead which is not always safe in a toddler’s room. It’s also worth noting that when the eyes close or open, it makes a noise, which could wake a light sleeper.

What we love

  • A lovely character with colour changing display and moveable eyes
  • Adjustable brightness/volume
  • Overnight and nap modes
  • Auto shut-off

What we don’t love

  • Even on the lowest setting, the night light is quite bright

What a Night Light is and When to Use One

A night light is just what it sounds like – a light you either plug into an outlet or charge that lights up when it’s dark. They either look like lights or sit on a counter as cute animals or other shapes.

You can use them in the hallway so your toddler can walk to the bathroom in the middle of nights and won’t be scared or put one in your kids’ room to keep it from being “big dark” as my son likes to say.

So, do babies need a night light? Or should the baby sleep with a night light? Babies don’t need night lights to sleep, but I found them helpful for those middle of the night feeds, diaper changes, or to peek my head in to see if everyone was alright in the baby’s room.

As your kids get older, they will appreciate a night light in case they need to get up and grab a drink of water or go potty in the middle of the night.

an image of the best baby night light lighting a baby's crib

Types of Night Lights

There are loads of different types of night lights available, from lights that stick into outlets to ones that sit on counters or tables. It all depends on how old your child is and whether you want it to be purely functional or be a toy as well.

Best Baby Night Light Australia

As mentioned earlier, babies don’t need a night light to sleep, but they can be helpful for other reasons. A lullaby night light can help to calm babies, while a baby light projector can provide interest when they are starting to see more around them.

The best newborn night light allows enough light for you to check on your baby, or change a diaper without having to turn on a bright overhead light, which can fully wake them.

You may find that the best night light for feeding a baby is one that, as well as the above, also works to create a relaxing atmosphere for mum. If both mum and baby are relaxed, feeding generally goes much smoother for both.

Best Night Light for toddlers

Night lights for toddlers serve a different purpose than for newborns. Toddlers are more aware of their surroundings but can be scared of dark spaces so their lights are generally dimmer.

The best dim night lights are bright enough that your toddler can find their way to their potty, or to a drink, but not too bright that it wakes them. The best night lights help your toddler develop their independence during the night (meaning better sleep for you!).

There are different types to look out for, from free standing to wall-mounted to children’s plug-in night lights. The best one for you depends on your toddler, although projectors are best avoided to decrease distractions at bedtime.

What to Look for in the Best Kids Night Light

When looking for the best nursery night light consider how it’s powered, what the controls are if there is a timer or has any extra functions you might want.

Power & Battery

Traditional night lights plug right into a power outlet and stay there. The benefits of a battery night light or chargeable night light is that you are not limited by where a power outlet is. You can easily take a battery operated night light with you and not have to worry about your child being afraid of the dark on vacation.

Controls

Some night lights have advanced control options beyond an on and off switch. The best children’s night lights come with remote controls that also adjust light brightness. Remote controls allow you to be sneaky and just barely open your baby’s door to turn off the light or turn it down without them knowing. A control for a breastfeeding night light is also handy because you don’t have to get up with a baby attached to your boob to adjust the brightness when it’s dark.

Timer

Timers are one of the best features of a night light. You can turn the night light on with a timer and not have to remember to go back in and turn it off after your baby falls asleep. Some baby night lights are projectors with music, and a timer is especially convenient for those type of night nights because the music won’t keep baby awake or distract them for too long.

Extra Functions

While these functions are some of the most obvious, there are plenty of other features to look out for when purchasing your night light. A few of these are listed below:

  • Colour changing/dimmable – just like a projector, this feature adds interest when your baby starts to become more aware of their environment. Dimmable lights are also good for toddlers as you can change how bright the room is once they are asleep.
  • Music/white noise – if the baby is having trouble sleeping, lullabies, or white noise can drown out distracting noises from other areas of the house.
  • Portable – these are really useful if a baby sleeps over at their grandparents’ house. Having a similar warm light source can help settle them even in a strange environment.

Another option is to buy a baby monitor with a night light already integrated, which allows you to see the baby more clearly from the monitor. Some baby monitors can be controlled by an app on your phone, meaning you don’t need to disturb the baby.

FAQs

Should Baby Sleep With Night Light?

Many new parents ask themselves, “Does my baby need a night light?”, and it’s not as simple an answer as you’d think. While they can help with those nighttime checks, and make the middle of the night feeds less disruptive, they can also have an adverse effect on how well the baby sleeps. There are positives and negatives (as with anything), so the easiest answer is to use your gut, and do what’s best for the baby and you.

Should I Get a Night Light for Kids Scared of the Dark?

Night lights can be a source of comfort for children who are scared of the dark and can help them sleep better. Ensure the light doesn’t illuminate the room too much or it will have a detrimental effect on their quality of sleep and remember to talk to them about their fear as well as treating the symptoms of it.

Where Can I Buy a Night Light?

Most mother and baby shops sell a range of night lights, so you could check out local stores. If you don’t live in an area with baby stores (like me) check out Amazon AU for fast shipping or Baby Bunting if you’re looking for another option.
