My Top Pick: Cherub Baby Glass Bottles

I used these glass bottles with my babies because I wanted an alternative to plastic. I was dubious at first but really didn’t need to worry as they were incredibly durable. I liked the silicone sleeves that did a great job of protecting the bottles but the best thing about them was that they grew with my daughters. We used them as bottles, then sippy cups and finally straw cups and lasted me for years.

Baby Bottle Reviews

Here are our top picks for the best baby bottles on the market.

Our Favourite: Cherub Baby Glass Bottle Starter Kit

Cherub Baby Glass Bottle Starter Kit, Yellow

Specifications

  • Material: Borosilicate glass
  • Size: 150 ml and 240 ml
  • Teat: Peristaltic teat

Thanks to this all-inclusive kit, you can start your bottle feeding journey using bottles that grow with your baby. The set features 4 wide neck glass bottles; 2 x 150ml and 2 x 240ml, protective silicone sleeves, 2 x slow flow teats, and 2 x medium flow teats. It also comes with travel seals and caps for leak-free feeding on the go and even a sippy cup adaptor pack and straw cup adaptor pack.

The fact you can use these bottles as both sippy cups and straw cups makes them great value for money and means you can use them for years to come.

These bottles are heat resistant, up to 600 Celsius, and made of non-toxic borosilicate glass. They’re also a dishwasher, microwave, and steriliser safe. The protective sleeves are nontoxic 100% silicone that’s BPA free and safe for baby.

The bottles are drop and shock-resistant, thanks to the silicone casing, and come with a full guarantee. I actually managed to break one – tile floors + clumsy mum. I rang the manufacturer and they were so apologetic and sent me a replacement out straight away, I could not fault their customer service.

In my opinion, these really are the best baby bottles for newborns. We got them when our daughter was a few weeks old and at 2.5 years they’re still useful thanks to the straw adaptor. Plus our second baby can use them as bottles again.

What we love

  • A complete kit to grow with baby
  • 100% nontoxic and BPA free
  • Travel seals and caps for maximum convenience

What we don’t love

  • A little heavier than plastic bottles but not a much as you might think!

Minbie Premium PPSU

My son breastfed for 12 months and did not take to any dummy or bottle that I tried, then I finally come across Minbie’s teats and bottle and FINALLY something that he liked! – Arizona

Specifications

  • Material: Medical grade PPSU
  • Size: 270ml
  • Teat: Natural latch

If you’re trying to transition away from breastfeeding or want to mix feed, the Minbie range of bottles and teats could be just would you need. I’ve been testing out the range with my 18 month old and my 6 month old niece and it’s smiles all round.

The bottles are made from PPSU which is a medical grade plastic that is super hard wearing, resistant to higher temperatures, BPA, BPS, phthalate, and lead free. This material isn’t just safe though, it also looks great as it gives the bottles a beautiful amber tone.

The real stars of the show here though are the special teats that are designed to encourage your baby’s natural breastfeeding latch and motion. They are praised by countless mums for helping to avoid nipple confusion or rejection and lazy feeding so that you can mix feed with ease.

The bottles are available in 210ml or 270ml and the teats come in 7 different flow speeds but we highly recommend saving yourself some money and investing in one of the bundles.

What we love

  • Closely mimics natural breastfeeding latch and motion
  • Durable and extra resistant to shattering
  • Beautiful amber colour with embossed writing

What we don’t love

  • Slightly more expensive than big mainstream brands but you do get a higher quality product from an Australian brand so definitely worth a few extra dollars!

Philips Avent Classic+ Anti-Colic

Philips Avent Classic+ Baby Bottles, 125ml, 3-Pack, SCF560/37

Great quality that last, I used these for my daughter 4 years ago and have ordered again for my daughter born last year Nov. – Meredith

Specifications

  • Material: BPA free plastic
  • Size: 125ml
  • Teat: Orthodontic

Another great option from Philips, this pack of 3 bottles is specifically designed to reduce colic and discomfort by limiting the amount of air that your little one is likely to swallow.

As the baby feeds the valve flexes to prevent the air inside the bottle from building up and vents it to the back of the bottle. The ribbed texture of the nipple keeps it in shape and helps prevent collapse and the shape creates a secure latch.

These bottles are great for newborns but they do come with the medium flow teats so be sure to purchase slow flow, newborn teats for little ones. however, they would make a great choice if you’re looking for the best baby bottles for gas and colic.

What we love

  • Anti-colic design

Dr Browns Options+ Narrow Neck

I bought these bottles when my baby was 3 days old and I started noticing he was having colic with a different brand bottle, as soon as he used his Dr. Brown’s bottle he was a different baby so happy after his feeding. These are amazing because you can use with or without a vent. – Denisse

Specifications

  • Material: BPA free plastic
  • Size: 120 ml
  • Teat: Soft silicone

The DrBrown’s Option Plus Narrow Neck bottle is the latest offering in the Dr Brown’s bottle catalogue. This bottle is convertible and it can be used with or without the patented venting system. It is recommended that you use the venting system for newborns, but as your baby grows the vent can be removed. The venting system creates a paced flow and prevents the baby from taking in any additional air that might cause gas or colic issues.

This BPA free bottle also ensures that your baby gets more nutrition from this bottle than others on the market. Because the formula or breast milk doesn’t have air mixed with it because of the positive pressure flow created by the vent system the vitamins in the formula or breastmilk are not exposed to oxidation. This is especially important for vitamins A, C, and E.

What we love

  • Convertible for use with or without the vent
  • Anti-colic design
  • Slimline design

What we don’t love

  • Vents can be tedious to clean.

How to Choose the Best Baby Bottles, 2023

Choosing the right baby bottle usually starts before the arrival of your little one. You might think about breastfeeding your newborn, but using a bottle can suddenly be the only option for some. Here are some factors to think about before choosing your baby’s bottle.

infant reaching for the camera whilst drinking from the best baby feeding bottles

Material

The material you choose for your baby bottles should be safe, heat-resistant, and easy to clean. There are several materials on the market, and each one of them comes with its own pros and cons.

Plastic

Plastic bottles are lightweight and convenient to carry around. They’re also affordable, so they will be more practical if you want to have lots of bottles on hand.

Plastic bottles are pretty hard to break or damage from accidental dropping and they are usually very robust.

However, they need to be replaced often or once the plastic starts to show signs of deterioration or becoming cloudy. If you feel that the plastic is showing signs of scratches or if the bottle starts to leak, then it should be tossed away. You should also keep an eye on the colour and odour of the bottle and discard it when needed.

Many people worry about the use of plastic in baby products. It’s worth noting that, although baby bottles in Australia should be bisphenol A (BPA) free, it’s not actually a legal requirement. Instead, in 2010 there was a “voluntary phase-out” at the request of the Australian government. So, always check to be 100% sure.

One other concern with plastic is that it can impart flavours into the liquid when heated, including formula and breastmilk.

Glass

Glass bottles have been around for years. They’re dishwasher safe and won’t cloud over time like some plastics. Glass is non-toxic, doesn’t react with food materials, is naturally BPA free, and won’t impart flavours into your baby’s milk.

Glass bottles are usually more expensive than plastic ones but they also don’t need to be replaced as often. Handled correctly, they will last for years to come and could be passed or sold on or even used in the kitchen to store food or mix salad dressings (yes I know someone who does that!)

Glass bottles are slightly heavier but not drastically so. They will also break easier than plastic but you might be surprised by how durable they are. Many come with silicone sleeves that protect them from breaking and make them easier to hold. Look for something made from strong borosilicate glass so you know it’s durable.

Silicone

Silicone bottles are becoming increasingly popular because they’re lightweight and safe. If you want something non-toxic but feel like the glass is a little too heavy, silicone baby bottles could be the answer.

These bottles aren’t as common as plastic, but they’re harder to break and lighter than glass, so they’re suitable for busy parents who like to travel or spend time away from home.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel bottles are very durable. They’re BPA free and won’t react with baby’s milk.

However, these bottles really uncommon, so they usually come with a higher price tag. These bottles are built to last but the major downside is you can’t see the amount of milk inside.

Other Features of the Best Baby Bottle, Australia

a mother feeding her infant using one of the best bottles for newborns

Shape

Baby bottles come in various shapes and sizes and it’s important to pick the right one for your baby.

The most common bottles are tall and straight, so they’re very easy to fill and clean. These are popular because you can use them right from newborn for smaller amounts of milk and they are still big enough to fit larger amounts for older children.

Angled bottles are more desirable to minimise stomach pain. They look just like standard bottles, but the bottle is slightly bent below the neck, preventing your little one from swallowing air that causes pain and discomfort. The only problem with angled bottles is that they’re more difficult to clean, whether you’re cleaning them by hand or in the dishwasher.

To make things even more confusing there are wide neck bottles and regular neck bottles. Wide necks are used to hold wide and short nipples that mimic the natural breast of the mother. They’re suitable for babies who haven’t yet got used to bottle feeding.

Capacity

Bottles come in small and large sizes. Small bottles usually hold 150 ml and are suitable for newborns. Once the baby grows, it’s more practical to switch to larger bottles as these will no longer hold enough milk for one feed.

You’ll need the larger size from about 4 months and they hold 240 ml, which is enough for a full feed. You can use 240 ml bottles right from the newborn stage though so it’s a good idea to buy the large size straight away and save yourself some money in the long run.

Nipple Material

The nipple material is crucial because if they don’t feel comfortable, the baby could refuse the bottle altogether. Nipples are most commonly made of silicone but some could be made from latex.

Silicone is a man-made material that’s durable and will last for a long time. It doesn’t retain flavours and is 100% tasteless. It’s a little harder in the mouth than latex and it can be damaged if babies bite it with sharp little teeth.

Natural rubber latex is a good option for parents who try to purchase only natural products. It’s made from natural tree sap and has a softer feel in the mouth than silicone. The downsides are that it doesn’t last as long as silicone and can be damaged by direct sunlight and fats so make sure to store teats in a cool dry place.

Whatever material you choose, keep an eye on them, and stop using them if there are any signs of damage. Cracks can be filled with bacteria that affect your baby’s health. Stop using the nipple if it shows any sign of discolouration or thinning.

Nipple Shape

Teats come in a variety of shapes. Standard nipples are long and narrow. Wide nipples are more suitable for babies who are just starting to use the bottle because they’re more like the human nipple.

Some parents choose to buy nipples that are flat on one side. These nipples make the baby feel like they’re feeding on the mother who is holding him close to her chest.

All teats have different levels of flow. You should pick the right level of flow based on how fast your baby can swallow. Infants and newborn babies need to suckle on the lowest level, and you should increase the level as the baby grows.

Finding the right shape for your little one can be a bit of trial and error. The great thing about baby bottles is that most can be used with any brand of the teat, so you can try different shapes. Just remember wide neck bottles will only fit wide neck teats and regular neck bottles will only fit standard neck teats.

When is the Right Time to Use the Best Bottles for Breastfed Babies, Australia?

If your aim is to mix feed, try to let the baby get the hang of breastfeeding before you introduce the bottle. Babies usually master the art of breastfeeding within 4 to 6 weeks. Giving your baby the bottle before this period could mean they develop a preference for the bottle and start to refuse the breast.

However, it’s a balancing act, and waiting too long could mean that baby refuses the bottle. If you want to successfully mix feed, don’t be disheartened if the baby doesn’t take to the bottle straight away. Sometimes a little persistence and patience is all you need.

Wrap Up

It’s important to choose a bottle that both you and baby are comfortable with. I spent a lot of money with my first trying different bottles and really I could have saved myself the hassle if I’d just put a little more thought into it.

We love the Cherub Baby Glass Bottle Starter Kit as our top pick because it comes with everything you need to have to help your little one get used to the bottle. The bottles are safe and durable, and the kit will last for a long time.

With our second baby, we also bought the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles. We happened to see a great deal on them, and the toddler was still using her Cherub bottles as sippy cups two years later (great investment). If we were having a third baby, I’d honestly be happy using either brand.
