Stokke Tripp Trapp

I love that it’s adjustable height for my table. I bought this for my 2 year old to feel like a big boy at the table and my only regret is not getting it sooner. – Carni

Specifications

  • Max weight: 110 kg
  • Dimensions: 49 x 79 x 46 cm
  • Recommended Age: 3+

We have this high chair at home, and we love it. The natural wooden design is lovely to look at and easy to clean. It’s designed to fit right up to a table, so baby is included in meals, rather than eating alone, which we love. Although it does come with a tray and harness so it can be used as a traditional high chair first.

It grows as the baby grows, turning into a regular child chair. Our daughter could climb onto it herself from about one year old, and still uses it now she’s three. The seat and footrests both adjust to ensure the baby is comfortable and safe at any age. Our nephew still uses his and he’s ten!

It’s a little more expensive than some of the other options, but it is very good quality and lasts so long that it’s seriously worth the money.

What we love

  • Made from natural materials
  • Fits right up to the table
  • Adjustable position so grows with baby

What we don’t love

  • None. I personally love this!

When mealtime is over the highchair can be easily cleaned by wiping it down with a damp cloth. When I lived in the country sometimes I would even just put this high chair in the garden and hose it down!!

This quality high chair has more features than you can count. While many of these are perhaps excessive (I’m looking at you cutlery holder), they all work to make this high chair a great option.

The six position height adjusts, and three position back and leg rests mean this chair will grow with baby and last you as long as you need it to. The removable padding also means its perfect for smaller babies, with plenty of support for their head and necks.

It’s another lovely looking chair, with wooden legs and an easy to clean seat (although the wooden legs do mean it’s not height adjustable so may not work for you depending on your table). The two footrests and tray are removable, and the tray also adjusts to three different positions.

  • The tray isn’t the easiest to take on/off – two hands are required

Childcare Primo Hook On

Childcare Primo Hook On High Chair, Moon Mist

  • Max weight: 15 kg
  • Dimensions: 47.5 x 45.5 x 36 cm
  • Recommended Age: 6 months+

Another option when looking at high chairs is the hook on variety, and this is a great example. It’s light and compact and the grey colour goes with any decor. The seat is removable to make clean up quick and easy, and then the whole seat folds up for storage and max portability.

Hooking on to the table means baby is included in mealtimes, no matter where you are, and is totally secure with the five-point safety harness, although the straps on this can be a bit fiddly.

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Fits any bench or table between 25 – 45 mm
  • Easy to fold up

What we don’t love

  • The straps are a bit fiddly and seem to cause the baby to lean forward slightly

We use this one personally when travelling. It’s lightweight but strong and packs down small enough to easily throw in our suitcase. Definitely a great option for anyone who travels regularly with their kids.

This is the high chair we use when travelling. It’s strong and sturdy, but still lightweight, and it fits in our suitcase! It folds almost flat and comes with a bag, so is a great option if you travel regularly with the baby.

The clamps allow it to be attached to a wide range of tables and benches, meaning the baby can eat with the family anywhere. The fabric is removable so clean-up is quick and easy, and the padded back means the baby is comfortable for longer.

Specifications

  • Max weight: 23 kg
  • Dimensions: 38.1 x 34.3 x 29.1 cm

This was the first baby chair I ever bought. I got it for our first baby and now, three years later, our second child is using it. Even with all this use, it’s still in great condition so is obviously really high quality.

It’s lovely and compact so perfect for travelling. It’s not quite small enough to fit in a standard suitcase like the chair above but I can fit it in our oversized Kathmandu bag. The colours are bright and look lovely in any home. It’s designed to easily attach to your dining chairs, so baby is included in mealtime, but also works as a floor seat for baby to play or have snacks.

Types of High Chairs

There are lots of different high chairs out there, from traditional to hook on and more, so it can be hard to know which high chair is best. I’ll take you through the different types below.

an image of a mum and baby using the best high chair during feeding time

Traditional High Chairs

This is the chair that pops into your head when someone says high chair. They are essentially a raised chair that allows the baby to eat at your level. If you’re looking for the best inexpensive high chair, a traditional one is your friend.

They are generally cheaper and simpler than other models and so can be the best high chair for babies if you’re looking for a simple model to l stay in your house

Convertible Chairs

The best convertible high chair grows with your child through the toddler stage, and sometimes even longer. They’re generally better valued for money than traditional models as they are designed to last longer.

Convertible models are also usually the best high chair for small spaces, as they mean you only need to buy one chair, instead of a number of different ones.

Portable High Chairs

When looking for the best portable high chair it’s important to think about where and what you’ll use it for. The portable chair you take to your friend’s house may not the best travel high chair for taking on holiday.

Think about whether you’d prefer a small solid chair that sits on its own or a foldable fabric chair that hooks onto tables or benches. Both have pros and cons, and it’s really a matter of personal preference (as well as the size of your suitcase!)

Important Features

When it comes to important features, there are a few to look out for when buying a high chair. I’ll go through these below.

Weight & Age

Some high chairs are only designed to be used up to a certain weight, or from a certain age. If you want a chair that will last longer, look for one that converts into a toddler chair, or has removable pads so baby can still fit when they’re a bit older.

The best high chair is going to be the one that fits baby now but will grow with them over the coming months and even years.

Comfort

As every parent will attest to, mealtimes with babies can last a long time. Solid food is a new and sometimes scary thing for babies to experience, and so you definitely don’t want them to be uncomfortable when they’re weaning.

Look for a chair that comes with padding, that will support babies and keep them comfy, but also a good harness, to keep them safe and secure.

Ease of Cleaning

While padding can be essential for keeping the baby comfortable at mealtimes, it can also be a magnet for crumbs. With a small baby or toddler, spending ages cleaning out the high chair is the last thing you want.

The best easy to clean high chairs will be wiped clean (no hand wash only please!), with a removable tray that can be thrown in the dishwasher for optimum ease.

Portability

Portability is important in high chairs, and not just in the way you think. The last thing you want when it’s dinner time is to be lugging a heavy, non-folding high chair around. Lightweight, folding, and easy to carry high chairs are just as important for everyday use, as they are for travelling.

In the reviews I’ve given you a peek at the different options for the best portable high chair Australia has to offer, but which one, in particular, is best for you mainly depends on what you need it for. Whether for holidays, meals out, or even just a trip to see family or friends. Keep your usage in mind when looking for one.

Safety Features

Don’t forget to check that the high chair you choose meets the Australian safety standards. All high chairs sold in Australia are required to meet these standards but with so many international stores online, we think it’s best to check.

FAQs

At what age, high chairs can be used?

Most high chairs can be used from six months onwards when the baby is starting to sit on their own and eat solid food. Depending on the model you choose, it can last you a couple of years or even longer.

What kind of harness should I look for?

High chairs generally come with one of two types of harness; three-point or five-point. Three-points secure babies around their waist and crotch, while five-points add two shoulder straps.

Which you choose is entirely dependent on you, both will keep the baby safe and secure. Five-points are considered the safest as they restrict movement more.

What if I have more than one baby?

Don’t worry, there are high chairs out there for you! Many companies offer seating solutions for multiple babies, although they can be fairly expensive.
